OROVILLE, CA - An Oroville man was killed and a friend faces possible DUI charges after their car skidded off an Oroville road early Saturday and flipped over before sheering off a power pole, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash happened on Oroville Quincy Highway west of State Route 162 in Oroville around 2:14 a.m. Saturday, a CHP statement reported.
Investigators believe driver Zachary Johnston, 24, of Oroville was driving his 1999 Honda Accord at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the car and skidded into an asphalt curb.
The car launched into the air and flipped over before slamming into the power pole, the CHP said.
Johnston's passenger, identified as Jeremy Bryson, 25, of Oroville, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Johnston was taken to Enloe Hospital in Chico, where he was treated for moderate injuries, including a cracked rib, facial cuts and bruises.
Johnston was then booked into the Butte County Jail on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter involving driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the CHP.
Oroville Quincy Highway remained closed for several hours while crews worked to replace the toppled power pole. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
