MODESTO, CA - After two days of searching, crews believe they found the body of a teen that disappeared down the Laird Slough of the San Joaquin River.

Eduardo Alvarez, 17, and his friends were swimming in the river on the 8600 block of Dos Rios around 4:51 p.m. Monday when he started struggling in the water, Stanislaus County sheriff's Sgt. Anthony Bejaran said.

A friend tried to help the teen and get him to shore, but couldn't hold on.

Bejaran said the teen's family was camping out by the river in hopes that the body would surface.

Around 5 p.m. Wednesday, a body was spotted by someone in the area. Crews responded to the location, where a family member identified Alvarez.

The body was taken to the coroner's office where an autopsy will be conducted. Bejaran said the presumed cause of death is drowning.
