Man shot by Stanislaus County deputy identified

KEYES, CA - A man was shot and killed by a Stanislaus County sheriff's deputy Monday evening.

Deputies responded to a home on the 5200 block of 10th Street, just off Highway 99, around 4:39 p.m., after a getting a call about a family fight, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department said.

When deputies got to the home, the fight escalated into a confrontation. A deputy had to use a Taser on a man later identified as George Ramirez Jr., 32, and called for backup. 

Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Anthony Bejaran said the deputy reported moments later he fired shots. Ramirez Jr. was taken to the hospital for treatment where he later died.

It was unclear what led up to the shooting.

When the shots fired call first went out, there was a large law enforcement response, including: Ceres Police Department, Turlock Police Department, California Highway Patrol and the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department.
