STOCKTON, CA - A mother and father are dealing with the loss of their 3-year-old son after the child shot himself Monday afternoon in Stockton, according to police.
Stockton Police Department spokesman Pete Smith said officers were called out to the 7100 block of Longbarn Drive where they found the boy with a gunshot wound. The child was transported to an area hopistal where he died, Smith said.
According to Smith, the boy's mother was in town from the Bay Area visiting with the boy's father. The mother was taking a nap about 1:30 p.m. when she awoke to the sound of a shot being fired. She found her son and called 911, SMith said.
Smith said the weapon, which was legally owned by the father, was unsecured. Apparently the boy found and was playing with the gun when it discharged, according to the preliminary investigation.
No names have been released at this time.
It will be up to the San Joaquin District Attorney's Office to determine if charges will be filed, Smith said.
