SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say three people - including two police officers - were shot in Santa Cruz Tuesday afternoon.

The two officers were killed as was a suspect, according to the Santa Cruz police chief.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel newspaper says the shootings took place around 3:30 p.m. as police were investigating a sexual assault when a suspect fired, hitting the two officers.

The second shooting took place while police were in pursuit of at least one suspect.

Monterey County deputies, officers from nearby Capitola and Watsonville joined the search.

Police said they were still searching for at least one other suspect.

Television helicopter shots showed a large number of heavily armed officers searching up and down streets of Santa Cruz.
