Police standoff at Newington Way and Folkstone Way in Elk Grove, Feb. 26, 2013

ELK GROVE, CA - A man found dead inside his Elk Grove home Tuesday after a nearly five-hour standoff with police and SWAT was identified by the Sacramento County coroner as 52-year-old Jeffrey Allen Beeson.

Elk Grove police Officer Chris Trim said a fight between a husband and wife at their home near Newington Way and Folkstone Way around 11:44 a.m. Tuesday turned into a standoff with police.

Trim said the husband allegedly put a loaded handgun to his wife's head and hit her with it. The couple's teenage son intervened and grabbed the gun. The woman and teen were able to run out of the house.

Several hostage negotiators and SWAT responded to the scene. During the standoff, officers attempted to contact the husband over the phone but he did not respond, Trim said.

When SWAT entered the home around 4:40 p.m., they found Beeson dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
