CITRUS HEIGHTS, CA - A pug is probably getting extra treats after alerting a Citrus Heights homeowner to an attic fire Sunday night.
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Chief Christopher Quinn said the homeowner was awakened by the barking of the 3-year-old pug, whose warning preceded the smoke detector.
Neighbors said the dog, named Ellie, is blind and belongs to the homeowner's daughter, who was traveling.
According to Quinn, firefighters were dispatched to the home in the 7600 block of Woodchuck Way at 11:12 p.m. and found heavy smoke.
The preliminary investigation revealed the fire appeared to have been caused by improperly discarded cigarette butts in a rear patio planter, which sparked an exterior fire that entered the home through the attic, said Quinn.
Damage to the home was estimated at $75,000.
