OAKDALE, Calif. - Two men were arrested in Oakdale Tuesday night after one of them fired shots at officers while attempting to evade arrest, according to the Oakdale Police Department.

Officers responded to the 400 block of Dodge Ave. around 4:57 p.m. in reponse to a report of two men hiding in an alleyway. Upon arrival, an officer found an unloaded 12-guage shotgun, but did not find the men, said police.

Shortly afterwards, a separate officer located two men, later identified as Eric Silva, 18, or Riverbank and James Fitzjarrell, 19, of Oakdale, carrying large bags while walking on the 400 block of Church Ave. Upon seeing the officer, the men dropped the bags, split up and fled, police said.

Additional Oakdale officers responded and located Silva and Fitzjarrell running near the railroad tracks south of the 300 block of W. J St. Police pursued and within seconds, an officer reported shots had been fired by one of the fleeing individuals, said police.

A perimeter was subsequently established in the area by Oakdale PD until assisting units arrived from the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office, Modesto and Ceres CHP, the District Attorney's office and other county law enforcement agencies.

According to police, Oakdale officers, Ceres K-9 Units and Modesto PD SWAT members conducted a house-to-house and yard-to-yard search, during which time one of the individuals was located on Mann Ct., bitten by the Ceres K-9 unit and detained.

About two-and-a-half hours later, Modesto SWAT located and apprehended the second man hiding in the backyard of a home on the 100 block of W J. St.

Evidence gathered during a subsequent investigation determined the shot fired at police was accidentally discharged as the individuals were running from police.

A total of six long guns and two semi-automatic pistols were recovered from the bags left behind by Silva and Fitzjarrell.

Oakdale officers later responded to a home in Oakdale in response to a report of eight stolen firearms. The theft victim then identified all firearms recovered from Silva and Fitzjarrel as his stolen property.
