TRACY, CA -The city of Tracy announced Tuesday has made it official. The online consumer ordering giant is set to build a huge warehouse on the city's east side.

City Manager Leon Churchill was understandably thrilled.

"This is a big step. All cities want economic development. A very simple economic theory is job creation begets housing demand, begets retail consumption. It's what we're trying to create here," Churchill said.

Amazon said the facility will be a high tech fulfillment center, meaning electronics and other small items will be stored and shipped from the location. Amazon hopes to have the warehouse open by the holidays later this year, creating about 1,000 jobs.

Churchill said Tracy's proximity to the Port of Oakland and Interstate 5 helped Amazon choose the San Joaquin County city. He also said his city is very prepared to make deals like this happen.

"I think we can deliver a project on time, better than anyone in California. When a project comes here, we ask 'What's the timetable?' We get it delivered," said Churchill.

Amazon is also creating approximately 1,500 jobs at another warehouse in Patterson in Stanislaus County.
