Apartment complex on Russle Park Dr. near UC Davis evacuated after explosion.

DAVIS, Calif. - Several apartment buildings at 418 Russell Park in Davis remain evacuated Thursday following an explosion and discovery of chemicals in one of the units, according to the UC Davis website.

UC Davis campus police learned of the incident after a UC Davis researcher was treated at a local hospital at 1:30 a.m. for hand injuries sustained in the explosion, said university spokesman Andy Fell.

Campus police said chemicals were found in the apartment, but did not specify the nature of those chemicals.

The university stated on their website that the area was considered safe, but a portion of the site was cordoned off as a precaution. Fell said the apartment in question was to be searched later Thursday morning.

Nearby apartments as well as the Orchard Park housing complex were evacuated as a precaution. Fell said there wasn't an estimated time when residents would be allowed to return.
