STOCKTON, CA - A man was arrested for attempting to steal a car while a woman slept in the front passenger seat Thursday morning.

Richard Alcantara, 23, was arrested after dumping the car with the victim and running from the scene, Stockton police said.

Around 4:06 a.m., the driver of the car, a 55-year-old man, stopped to get gas; his passenger, a 28-year-old woman, was asleep in the front passenger seat.

According to police, Alcantara jumped into the driver's seat and drove off with the woman still asleep in the car.

When the woman woke up, she found Alcantara driving the car.

Police said the man was able to call the woman's cell phone and get her location. Police found the woman and the vehicle in the 1800 block of West Flora Street as Alcantara ran down the block. The woman was not injured.

Alcantara was later arrested.
