PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Authorities say the man who opened fire in a suburban Portland shopping mall apparently killed himself after fatally shooting two people and wounding a third.

Clackamas County sheriff's Lt. James Rhodes says law enforcement who flooded the Clackamas Town Center in response to the afternoon shooting didn't fire any shots.

Hundreds of holiday shoppers and store employees evacuated the mall after the shots rang out around 3:30 p.m. Many others hid in stores. Rhodes said deputies went through the mall to get them out.

Witnesses described a scene of chaos and disbelief as a gunman wearing some sort of camouflage outfit and a white mask shot an initial burst of fire and then more rounds near the mall's food court.

The third victim, an 18-year-old female, was transported to the hospital for treatment. Rhodes said she is awake and talking to her family.

Many shoppers fled and others hid in the backrooms of stores.

One witness said the scene "was just awful."

A woman shopping in the Macy's for a Christmas dress for her daughter when she heard a two or three pops that sounded like firecrackers. She said hundreds of shoppers and mall workers started running and that there was "chaos."

Another witness told the station she saw people screaming and parents grabbing their children as they fled the mall.

Another witness said she heard about 20 shots.
