MODESTO, Calif. - Modesto police said they arrested three suspects for allegedly scamming people into giving them money for the death of an infant.
Police said Mark Barajas, 35, Janie Barajas, 26, and Lisa Barajas, 37, were standing on the side of the road near the intersection of Sisk Road and Briggsmore Avenue holding a poster size sign, which depicted a picture of an infant and a caption that read "Funeral donations for Baby Daniel Lopez."
The three suspects were soliciting drivers to raise money for the baby's funeral costs and ended up raising $400; however, after police talked to the three suspects, they discovered the fundraiser was a scam.
Police said their investigation revealed the three printed pictures of an infant they found online. Additional posters, depicting a picture of a toddler, were also located in the truck of the suspect's vehicle.
"Heartless. How do they come up with that mindset," parent Lizet Guizar said.
The suspects were arrested for defrauding the public and conspiracy and were booked into the Stanislaus County Jail.
