Falling tree hits pick-up truck on Green Valley Road, killing driver, Dec. 4, 2012

EL DORADO COUNTY, CA - A falling tree killed a man on Green Valley Road near Rescue Tuesday morning.

California Highway Patrol Officer Quinn Cuthbertson said the driver, identified as 48-year-old Bryan Van De Venter of Shingle Springs, tried to evade the oak as it came down on the north shoulder of the road. The tree crushed the cab.

A 10-year-old boy in the pick-up survived. Two passersby saw what happened and pulled him out of the truck.

The CHP says the boy was unhurt and was with his mother.

Van De Venter was the boyfriend of the boy's mother, Susan Jones. Van De Venter was taking the boy to school.

"I know if it wasn't for him, my boy would be dead," Jones said. "And I can't thank him enough and he knows that."

She wanted to acknowledge the two men who got her son out of the truck because he didn't want to leave Van De Venter.

"I'd like to thank them for taking him out of the car and making him go. That's what Bryan would want, too," Jones said.

The tree also damaged phone and cable lines, affecting service to AT&T and cable TV customers.

The accident happened in the westbound lane of Green Valley Road near Ponderosa Road at approximately 8 a.m.
