EL DORADO COUNTY, CA - A major car accident near Placerville killed four people and injured several more on Saturday night.
The collision happened at about 6 p.m. when a Toyota Prius and Toyota minivan collided on Highway 50 near Still Meadow Road.
Battalion Chief Michael Pott says that a total of nine people were involved in the collision.
Preliminary reports say that the Prius, carrying four people, was traveling westbound when, for an unknown reason, it veered out of the traffic lane, traveled sideways into oncoming traffic, and was broadsided by the minivan.
Three people in the Prius were pronounced dead by emergency officials at the scene. A fourth passenger was transported to the hospital.
One child traveling in the minivan was also transported to a hospital where they later died, said Pott.
Two 1-year-old children in the mini van were properly restrained and did not suffer any injuries in the crash, Pott said.
The eastbound lanes of Hwy 50 were closed for a prolonged length of time and the westbound lanes were used for one-lane traffic control.
