PENN VALLEY (NEVADA COUNTY), CA - A homecoming celebration this afternoon will mark the return of a local soldier who was critically wounded by an Afghan insider attack in July.
Cpl. Brandon Walden, 20, has been recovering at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and is returning to Nevada County for the first time since the shooting in Afghanistan.
Walden and four fellow soldiers were shot in Wardak Province by a man wearing an Afghan National Army uniform.
Walden shared the story in a special report on News10 earlier this month.
Walden will arrive at Sacramento International Airport on a United Airlines flight at 1 p.m. and travel directly to Penn Valley, where a parade will carry him to Western Gateway Park at approximately 2:30 p.m.
Walden will return to San Antonio next week to continue his rehabilitation, which could take up to two years.
Walden's mother, Laura Cummins, and five of his six brothers and sisters plan to move to San Antonio to be with him during his long recovery.
