SACRAMENTO, CA - The chief judge of the U.S. District Court became stuck in a courthouse elevator for 45 minutes Thursday morning.
Morrison C. England, Jr. arrived 20 minutes late to his courtroom on the 14th floor of the Robert T. Matsui Federal Courthouse to hear the 9 a.m. criminal calendar.
"Sorry I'm late," England said as he took the bench in front of a full house of court staff, attorneys, defendants and spectators.
"I was stuck in an elevator for 45 minutes," he said sharply, offering no further details.
Courthouse security staff said the judges use an elevator not available to the general public, but were not familiar with Thursday's incident.
A spokeswoman for the US General Services Administration, which operates the courthouse, said she was trying to gather more information.
