Sutter County sheriff's Deputy Rory Roguski

YUBA COUNTY, CA -  A 25-year-old off-duty Sutter County sheriff's deputy was killed in a suspected DUI crash late Wednesday night.

The California Highway Patrol says Rory Roguski was a passenger in a car driven by Erin Marie Jasper, 26, of Oregon House. Jasper was driving a 1999 Ford Mustang westbound on Highway 20 just west of McGanney Lane in the county when her vehicle drifted to the right while on a left-hand curve in the road.

The CHP initial investigation found the Mustang's right-side wheels left the pavement and Jasper turned sharply to the left to get back on the roadway. At that point, she lost control of the car and it skidded across both lanes of traffic and slammed head-on into a rock wall abutting the south side of the highway. The impact caused the Mustang to spin around and travel back across the roadway before stopping on the north side of the westbound shoulder.

Emergency responders determined Roguski was dead from his injuries, according to the CHP. Jasper was taken by ambulance to Sutter Roseville Hospital for medical treatment and arrested on felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter charges.

The CHP said neither Roguski nor Jasper were wearing seatbelts. The Mustang was traveling 55 mph when it wrecked.

According to the Appeal-Democrat, Roguski had been promoted to full-time deputy status in July after serving as a reserve deputy for two years.
