ELK GROVE, CA - A three-car crash in Elk Grove left four dead and several others injured Sunday afternoon.

The collision occurred at about 3:40 p.m. on the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 south of Elk Grove Boulevard.

California Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Languemi said the driver of a Ford Expedition crossed the southbound lanes of I-5 and drove into oncoming traffic on the northbound side, hitting multiple cars.

The Expedition collided with a Honda Accord and a Toyota Rav4 pulling a trailer.

Three people in the Expedition were killed as well as the driver of the Honda Accord, says Langueimi. The seven others injured were expected to make a full recovery.

Two of those injured and taken to UC Davis Medical Center are students at Lathtop High School, confirmed school Principal Dr. Mike Horwood.

"There was no witnesses saying that there was reckless driving, there's no indication of being drunk, there's no obvious indication of equipment failure, so that is why our investigation team is coming out to take a look at it," said Languemi.

Monday, CHP Officer Michael Bradley said the initial investigation suggests the driver of the Expedition may have made an unsfe turning movement but the actual cause could take several weeks to determine. The SUV will be examined to determine if there was a mechanical failure of any sort.

Traffic was diverted off the freeway at Twin Cities Road.

The northbound lanes of I-5 were closed as the CHP investigators worked the scene of the accident. The northbound lanes were reopened by midnight.

UPDATE: One of the individuals killed in the wreck was identified on Monday morning as 50-year-old Kulwant Gill.
