OAKLAND, CA (AP) - Authorities say a worker was killed at the Port of Oakland after he was crushed while inspecting a crane.
Police say the man was with another worker inspecting a crane Wednesday morning when he was hit by a moving portion of the machine at Berth 37.
Cal-OSHA spokesman Peter Melton says the worker suffered serious head and chest injuries. He was taken to Summit Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
Port spokeswoman Marilyn Sandifur says the worker is a crane mechanic affiliated with the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers.
His name has not been released. His co-worker was not injured.
The incident is under investigation.
State records show that this is the first accident at the port in five years. The port is the fifth-busiest in the United States handling some $41 billion in cargo last year.
