WILLIAMS, CA (AP) - A pair of wildfires in Northern California that is threatening 23 residences has grown, even as firefighters made some progress containing areas of the blaze.

The fires in Colusa County - referred to as the16 Complex - on Thursday evening had grown to more than 15 square miles, or 9,754 acres, up from 11 square miles, or 7,040 acres at the start of the day.

The blazes have been fueled by strong winds from a thunderstorm system that also pummeled the region with lightning strikes.

State fire officials said the 16 Complex fire was burning in grass, brush and oak woodland in steep terrain.

The fire was 20 percent contained, up from 10 percent earlier in the day, and has resulted in an evacuation advisory for the Cortina Rancheria area.
