SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Shortly before 10 p.m. on Saturday night emergency crews responded to a fire caused by a plane crash.
Witnesses reported a plane crash in the meadow area east of Winnemucca Ave, north of the South Lake Tahoe Airport, said El Dorado County Sheriff Lt. Pete Van Arnum.
Witnesses heard the plane having apparent engine problems and saw the plane dip downward into the ground while attempting a turn and the plane immediately burst into flames and spread into a 1 acre fire. The fire took about a half and hour to extinguish, Van Armnum said.
Much of the identifying information of the plane was destroyed by the fire. The plane apparently did not file a flight plan with the South Lake Tahoe Airport. Both the FAA and NTSB will be conducting an investigation of the crash, Van Arnum said.
