FOLSOM, CA - A visible security presence could be seen outside the Wells Fargo Bank along East Bidwell Street in Folsom Wednesday afternoon.
The day before, a man was shot and killed by Folsom police after he robbed the bank.
The suspect entered the bank, stole the money and fled around 5:11 p.m. During a search of the area, they found the 32-year-old suspect walking with a backpack through a neighborhood. He led police on a pursuit and climbed atop a Target rooftop.
After leaving the Target roof, the suspect eventually fled the area and headed to a home at the 1300 block of School Street. The house was occupied with a family of six including young children. Police said the suspect tried to enter a locked room where the family was hiding.
Police eventually entered the home and a deputy shot the suspect in the back.
During the investigation following the shooting, police found a hand ax on the roof and a stolen car in the Target parking lot.
Sgt. Jason Browning of Folsom police believes the shooting was justified.
"Both bank employees thought he had a gun, and even the pictures depict he had a gun or some other weapon," Browning said.
Police later learned the weapon was an ax. They believe the man dropped it on the roof before heading to the neighborhood.
Neighbor Shirley Francis is relieved that no one else was hurt.
"When I went to bible study today, I requested prayer for the family and for the family of the suspect because even though he did what he did he has a family who loves him too," Francis said.
Folsom police have not released the man's name, pending confirmation by the Sacramento County Coroner's office.
