FAIR OAKS, CA - A man was shot and killed by deputies during a standoff at a Fair Oaks home which lasted more than four hours Thursday afternoon.
Sacramento County sheriff's deputies went to the home on the 4800 block of Vir Mar Street around noon to arrest 47-year-old Michael Craig Berger of Fair Oaks who was wanted for making terrorist threats, Deputy Jason Ramos said.
As deputies made contact with Berger, one of the deputies reported seeing a man in a back room of the residence holding a firearm. Deputies called for backup. The Special Enforcement Detail (SED) and the Critical Incident Negotiations Team (CINT) (AKA SWAT) responded, making phone contact with Berger and urging him to come out.
Deputies evacuated nearby neighbors as a precaution.

Ramos said around 4 p.m., Berger came out from his garage and brandished a long-barrel rifle at officers. A deputy fired a shot at Berger, hitting him the upper body, Ramos said.
Berger went back inside of his home.
Unable to get a response from Berger, SWAT sent a robot into the home. Images from the robot showed the man was not moving. Officers then entered the home.
Inside, deputies found Berger dead from a gunshot wound, Ramos said.
Ramos said the deputy involved in the shooting was placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
