FORESTHILL, CA - CalFire says 250 firefighters are attacking a  wildfire on the Foresthill side of the American River Canyon, southeast of Colfax in Placer County.

Daniel Berlant, spokesman for CalFire, said the fire has consumed 220 acres along Shirttail Canyon Road and Yankee Jims Road. He described the terrain as rugged and steep.

CalFire reports crews have 20 percent containment.

Evacuations were ordered for the following roads: Macy Creek Road, Abeline Road, Blind Doe Road, Mountain Lion Road, Yankee Jims Road near the river and the Iowa Hill area. The evacuations will be in effect through the night, Berlant said.

These roads are closed: Just Road, Big Dipper, Glory Mound Road, Kings Hill Road, Blind Dog, Brushy Bear and Shirttail Canyon.

Residents can shelter at Foresthill Memorial Hall at 24600 Harrison Street. The American Red Cross is helping evacuees.

In addition, Sugarpine Reservoir east of Foresthill has been closed.

Residents in the Iowa Hill area were warned they may be evacuated.

For evacuation-related information, residents can call the Placer County Office of Emergency Services at 530-886-5310.

Wednesday when the fire broke out, Officer David Martinez with the California Highway Patrol in Auburn said officers were searching for at least two men witnessed shooting off fireworks in the Colfax area near Yankee Jims Road.

Grass Valley, Colfax, Auburn, Loomis and other Placer County fire agencies have responded.
