SACRAMENTO, CA - A possible suspect in a carjacking in West Sacramento is dead after a shootout with officers Friday evening, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.
The person was in an apartment at the Ardenaire apartment complex at 1972 Ethan Way. Deputy Jason Ramos said the individual started a fire in the apartment unit. Flame-colored smoke could be seen billowing over the apartment complex.
The Howe Avenue and Cottage Way area was cordoned off and the Ardenaire apartments were evacuated. An evacuation center for residents was available at Howe Park Community Center, 2201 Cottage Way.
Law enforcement had been searching in the Arden-Arcade area since finding the carjacked pickup at Lerwick Road and Morse Avenue about 11:40 a.m. Investigators were working to confirm if the person who stole the truck was also responsible for another carjacking and shooting in West Sacramento earlier Friday morning.
A SWAT unit surrounded a house on Lerwick where the pickup was located and later, SWAT was at a house on Edison Avenue behind Lerwick in the effort to find the carjacker.
Law enforcement also detained one person in the area of Morse and Auburn Boulevard but it was determined the individual was not connected to the crime and he was released.
Carden School at 3020 Marconi Avenue was placed on lockdown and school officials asked parents to pick up their children.
According to the California Highway Patrol, before the pickup was taken, a man stole a tractor and drove it to County Road 127 and Old River Road where he hit the truck owner in the back of the head and stole his 2008 brown Ford F-150 pickup.
Officer Adrien Quintero said the person committing the theft matched the description of the individual suspected in an earlier carjacking near Harbor Boulevard in West Sacramento. However, Quintero did not confirm the same man committed both acts.
