STOCKTON, CA - A hand grenade found by a Stockton family cleaning an abandoned house was safely detonated by San Joaquin County bomb squad professionals Tuesday afternoon.
Stockton police roped off the area around Rose and Harrison streets for the investigation.
Sgt. Brian Pendergrass said the people found the grenade in the backyard and carried it to the front yard before calling police. Pendergrass said it wasn't advised that people move grenades if they're found. It's best to call police and let them handle the situation.
Pendergrass said it wasn't unusual for grenade calls to come in. He said veterans of World War 2 would bring home the devices as souvenirs.
Pendergrass didn't know if the grenade was live or not but it was detonated safely about 1:35 p.m. nonetheless.
